Electric Bikes vs. Electric Motorcycles: What’s the Difference?

News & Updates

E-Bikes vs. E-Motos: Images of a Class 1 electric bike (a white BULLS electric mountain bike), a Class 2 electric bike (a blue Pedego electric bike), a Class 3 electric bike (a light blue Urtopia electric bike), and a dark gray electric motorcycle.

At Practical Cycle, we only sell and service electric bikes (e-bikes). Electric motorcycles (also known as e-motos or e-motorcycles) are highly dangerous, especially for young people.

We always promote safe riding as electric bikes were intended to make bike riding accessible for the everyday person. This means obeying the rules of the road, like posted speed limits, riding on the right side of the road (and not on sidewalks), using a bell to warn pedestrians you are approaching, etc.  Be sure to check your local city’s requirements when it comes to electric bikes (and electric motorcycles).

Electric Bicycles

Electric bikes are equipped with fully operable pedals, have maximum speeds of 20-28MPH, and an electric motor of less than 750 watts. A red light or reflector is required, day and night. Manufacturers and distributors are required by law to apply a permanent label in a prominent location to each electric bicycle that specifies which Class Number the bike is, its Top Assisted Speed, and the Motor Wattage.

Electric Motorcycles

In comparison, electric motorcycles have motors that can go up to 2000 watts, speeds up to 80MPH, and do not have pedals. To drive an e-moto, you must have a California drivers’ license. E-motos are only allowed for off-road use on private property (unless street legal with a license plate) and must be registered with the DMV. Important Note: Many after-market pedal kits are sold for e-motos; but that does not qualify e-motos as e-bikes.

The below chart provides a side-by-side comparison of key differences you should know about when doing your research. Our team of experts can help you select the right e-bike for your needs!
